What’s Next for Elliot? And a Couple of Easter Eggs I Found for Season 2

With Season 2 set to start in less than two weeks, the hacker drama is rife with questions many are hoping to be answered, from Tyrell’s mysterious fate to how Whiterose and his Dark Army truly figures in the equation.

We’ve even explored on a previous article (using deductive reasoning), the possible identity of the mysterious person who ended last season impatiently banging on the door.

But Mr. Robot is not really about those guys, it’s about the show’s protagonist – the hacker with a “heart of gold” – Elliot Alderson himself. What’s in store for our “hero”? How is the season going to be like for him? Are unexpected actions in his horizon?

Elliot in Seclusion

That’s actually copied verbatim from the published plot synopsis for the season 2 premier, and we’re just going to get it out of the way this early because of how hilarious it is.

I mean, when was Elliot not “in seclusion”? When not buried in his navy blue hoody for the bulk of each episode, Elliot subjects us to his distaste of pop culture (for the record, Marvel movies are not stupid) and just looks painfully awkward in any social situation.

A different episode would be Elliot riding an Uber cab to meet Angela for dinner at Sbarro with a synopsis that says “Elliot attempts to hide in plain sight” but then it wouldn’t be Mr. Robot. So yeah, this isn’t a revelation at all.

Elliot’s CDs are Compromised

Like Batman’s stash of fail-safes against his Justice League teammates or Dexter’s blood slide trophies, Elliot’s burned audio CD’s of subject dossiers scream “Chekhov’s gun” big time and just asking for a subplot wherein someone stumbles on it and the tables are turned. Granted, Elliot has it encrypted like a regular audio CD with no one the wiser.

But I still firmly believe this will be covered as early as next season as he crosses swords with a more intelligent adversary.

Relationship with Angela

Besides the overt “shipping” which may or may not happen next season (if the show plans on going in that direction, they are probably better served making it official in a future season for fun and profit), everyone’s curious to see how Elliot will view Angela after he learns that she now shares a bed with his sworn enemy.

It’s also interesting to see how Angela’s hiring fits Evil Corp’s plan because clearly, there’s a motive behind it – and you can bet that it involves Elliot.

Elliot and Mr. Robot

If we’re going to base Elliot’s upcoming interactions with Mr. Robot on how the season finale ended (and the fact that it’s Christian Slater playing the titular character).

Expect to see the two banter frequently again in season 2. Owing to the overt Fight Club references, can we expect an actual catharsis for Elliot as he extricates Mr. Robot from his consciousness?

Elliot’s Withdrawal

Midway through the season, Elliot kicked the drug habit cold turkey and subjected viewers (and fsociety) to a series of long-winded, withdrawal vignettes that fortunately lasted just that episode. It’s up for debate which was more annoying to watch – his or Jack Bauer’s – as we all wished for it to end so Elliot (and Jack) can go back to what makes their respective shows so awesome.

Be that as it may, given the show’s dark tone and our protagonist’s rather sketchy persona, it’s not going to surprise anyone should Elliot backslide and fall to his morphine-snorting ways as most addicts are known to do.

Forced Hacks

Evil Corp logoWhile Mr. Robot is notable for eschewing hacker tropes and have proven time and again that they are a step ahead (the above mentioned audio CD encryption for one), there is still the looming inevitability that Elliot will be “caught” by Evil Corp. But a fairly plausible course of action for them would be to put Elliot’s talents to use and work for them, whether it’s out of duress or in exchange that they call things even.

Hacks to Elude Capture

Another scenario that may very well happen is Elliot trying to elude both the authorities and Evil Corp – and how else but by performing hacks left and right with the same grounded realism and cool ingenuity that he’s known for. It’s a thrilling prospect that makes for an exciting season, and we truly can’t wait to see everything unfold.
